One of the pretensions for the current US #tariffs is that they were installed to boost US manufacturing and protect it against cheap Chinese competition.
But manufacturing does not arise in a vacuum.

Germany, for instance, has retained a strong manufacturing base despite the rise of Chinese manufacturing, and that is because the German government actually promotes training in this field - and has done so since the 19th century, when "building a strong manufacturing base" became a matter of national importance to allow Germany to compete with England.

I don't think that boosting trade education is what the Republicans have in mind, though - if they indeed have put any thought into this at all. It is far more likely that they just assume that manufacturing arises spontaneously if the wages are depressed enough...

The latest AI teaching tool essentially takes the teacher out of the lesson. Upload PDFs and articles, it creates a podcast. Kids listen to the podcast. Questions? Kid raises their hand, podcast stops and waits for the question then answers them. Podcast does not sound like a machine either. It’s very lifelike and sounds very natural.
Why are teachers embracing tools that can be used to make them obsolete? Because there are a heck of a lot of teachers drinking the cool aid.
