A basic walk in Kyoto is from the Kawaramachi Station area along shops to Yasaka Shrine, then Maruyama Park (first photo). But instead of turning right toward the traditional shops along the slope and reaching the world heritage temple Kiyomizudera, I sometimes turn left and go along the slope to Chion-In (other three photos), the national head temple of a Pure Land Buddhist sect. Pure Land Buddhism has the most adherents in Japan, and this is a very large-scale temple for parishioners and members nationwide, rather than a sort of outdoor museum or monument like Kiyomizudera and most other major tourist attractions.
Everywhere in Kyoto and other prefectures is gorgeous during the fleeting cherry blossom viewing season, so any walking route with a lot of cultivated nature is rewarding to experience now.

August 21, 1983: After a steep scramble up a rockslide, the trail broke out of the forest onto open rocks and ledges along the ridge crest with great views southward across the valley. The neighboring large towns of North Adams and Williamstown spread out below, covering a broad, relatively flat section of that river valley.
Oh, it was a broody day, that afternoon by Palouse Falls in Washington state.
The clouds built up and up, heavy in the sky, portentous of a mighty storm to come. And then there was a little break, enough for the sun to glance through, and the storm didn't seem so inevitable after all.

Most of my big hiking adventures so far have happened in Yosemite. But for my second backpacking trip, I felt like I should escape my Yosemite bubble, get out of my comfort zone, and experience something new. Enter Henry Coe, the largest state park in Northern California at 87,000 acres.
