For those of you who enjoy #accessibility meetups, take note: On the 16th of April, that’s next week indeed, we’re organising an accessibility meetup in Amsterdam It starts at 16:00 and there’s a borrel afterwards. I can’t wait to see you all again!

More details later this week.

OK, so this is weird. Posting in case anyone else is having the same issue although I seem to be in a minority of 1.
I am lucky enough to have 2 pairs of Meta Rayban glasses thanks to Santa bringing me a 2nd pair at Xmas.
But I have struggled with activating Be My Eyes when I change glasses, so I got into the habit of disconnecting then reconnecting Be My Eyes whenever I switched glasses. A bit of a pain but it meant I could use the glasses when I needed them.
Then the Accessibility option within the MetaView app vanished, meaning I couldn’t use this option.
But I’ve just opened the Be My Eyes app and gone into settings where there is a button for Meta Raybans. If you tap this, there is an option to control within the MetaView app. I tapped this and the usual Accessibility option of the MetaView app suddenly appeared, allowing me to disconnect &reconnect again.
Weirdly, if I open the MetaView app without going through Be My Eyes, the #Accessibility option still isn’t there.
I’m very confused, but at least this means I should be able to use the glasses the next time I need to call a volunteer via the glasses.
Apologies for the long post.

Thanks to @TheBreadmonkey I learned of the existence of @altbot !

Some people have to do a lot of work to get text typed out, and find posting images much quicker - it makes total sense not to suggest someone typing with a sip-puff or other switch to have to also fill in the ALT text.

Also sometimes we're in a hurry. Or we're wanting to report on a fast changing situation. Or whatever other myriad reasons! Looks like altbot can help :)

Tip for those who don't have much hand strength or just get tired holding pickets for hours - sandwich boards work!

Also printing t-shirts with your mesage.

Also creating hats with lightweight signs on them.

Your bike/trike/wheelchair/service animal can have signs, too!

Just an ergonomic tip from someone with low hand strength who has protested before. #HandsOff #Accessibility

Question for folks who use screen readers: what is your preferred way for someone to write individual letters? Example, spelling out the letters on a sign that do not add up to a real word.

I did alt text for a picture of signs that were badly made. When describing the text layout, I went with "Capital Letter space Capital Letter". How well does that work versus maybe "Capital Letter dash Capital Letter"? Or is there a better option?

@mike Who set up that webpage? It is not readable to me: light-grey font on white background. Why do think some designer/people that text has to be fashionable of the cost of readibility? Thanks, that I can read it in Reader Mode.
PS Since some years I notice that bad idea being "en vogue". (Even horrible: white font on black background.)

Yesterday @peterrowlett asked me if I'd made a tool for simulating colour vision deficiency and I thought "yeah, that's totally the kind of thing I would have done".

Well, if I had done it, I can't find it now. So I spent an hour this morning making one:

cvd-simulator.think.somethingo

I used the same method that Firefox's dev tools uses to simulate colour vision deficiency: multiply each pixel's (R,G,B) vector by a matrix representing the eye's response in each kind of colour receptor.

My bio is getting unwieldy, so here's a pinned post with all relevant info about me!

Reminder: I typically don't follow those who don't use alt text with images or videos. I might make exceptions for those who mostly add alt text, but if the entire timeline is images without it, I either have to add the alt text, which takes time. It's easier not to share them. (I have a lot of friends who use screen readers, plus it's good form: Writing your own alt text lets you provide context that I won't otherwise get.)

In case anyone was wondering 🙂

#introduction
New instance new intro!!

I'm somcak, a #librarian currently in #Ohio. I have 2 mini #dachshunds and 2 #cats. I enjoy all sorts of music, yes, even death metal on occasion!

I've been on Mastodon since October 2022, and this is my 5th server.

I use content warnings for all sorts of stuff, just trying to be considerate! I always make sure there's #AltText and #CamelCase for my own posts as well as those I boost. #Accessibility matters.
I enjoy learning about #history and #archeology, particularly the #neolithic. I'm also interested in #UrbanPlanning and how we can make communities greener. I have an #ebike and care about #CompleteStreets.
